The ʻAina aloha mural is coming to the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) on Friday, March 4, 2016.
The mural is expected to be on display in the Medical Education Building lobby for one month. A ceremony to welcome the mural begins in the lobby at 3:30 p.m. with a lecture, followed by a reception at 4:30 p.m.
Hawaiian artists, led by Melanna Meyer, designed the mural to be a visual expression of historical trauma in Hawaiʻi–but also about resilience and fortitude.
The mural has been displayed at Hawaiʻi art galleries, including downtown’s Mark’s Garage. According to JABSOM Department of Native Hawaiian Health (DNHH) Chair Keaweʻaimoku Kaholokula, PhD, “It is a powerful piece that creates great dialogue around social and cultural determinants of health in a positive and uplifting way.”
The DNHH is covering the cost of the temporary display and the necessary educational/informational materials for the mural.
