Traveling coast to coast on a mission to learn more about Geriatric Medicine isn’t a bad way to spend your summer, ten members of the MD Class of 2018 are reporting.

They’re taking part in “MD5″ — the two and a half month unit between first and second year at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), where soon-to-be second year students get to leave JABSOM’s classrooms to have fun while expanding their knowledge and appreciation of medicine.

Students have diverse options to choose from, including completing research at home or on the U.S. Mainland, taking an online microbiology class, completing a pathology elective, volunteering as a camp counselor at the Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camp, undergoing clinical experiences on the neighbor islands, or international experiences in Philippines, Samoa, and Japan.

This summer, 10 of our students are participating in the Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) program! The program matches students with a mentor to complete a research project that interests them in the field of geriatric medicine.

Catch up with members of the MD Class of 2018 as they hook up with their medical student colleagues at the University of Washington, UCLA, University of California at San Deigo and Johns Hopkins. They’re on a MD5 mission!

Their blog is on-line at: MSTAR BLOG.

From the students: “You’ll see us back in the MEB on August 31! :)
