HONOLULU – Solutions tackling state challenges involving homelessness and jail facility visitation received top honors at the Hawaiʻi Annual Code Challenge (HACC) Judging and Awards Ceremony, held at the Aloha Tower Marketplace. If three of the faces among the competitors look familiar, it is because they are student employees at the University of Hawaiʻi (UH) in the John A. Burns School of Medicine Help Desk of Office of Information Technology. Well done, Kenneth Dedicatoria, Gabriel Farinas and Sharey Vendiola–for making JABSOM and the UH proud! (And UH West Oʻahu, too! They are all students at UHWO.)
The event at Aloha Tower was the culmination of the month-long, hackathon-inspired competition designed to engage the local tech community in the modernization of Hawai;i state government.
Twenty-seven teams presented solutions to the HACC judges panel, which consisted of Gov. David Y. Ige; Sen. Glenn Wakai; Todd Nacapuy, state Chief Information Officer (CIO); Garret Yoshimi, vice president of IT and CIO, University of Hawaii; Camille Au, director, Desktop Services, Hawaiian Electric; Bill Hozey, business sales managing partner, Hawaiʻi and Alaska, Verizon; and Donna Scannell, VP of IT operations and business information officer, Kaiser Permanente. Solutions were judged on originality, design, sustainability, utility and impact, team collaboration, presentation and delivery, and bonus points for “audience’s top choice.”
