MD students, staff and faculty are invited to walk this Saturday, April 15, in the annual Life Foundation Honolulu AIDS Walk. The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) has two teams — either one would be happy to have you!
The place is Kapiʻolani Park. At 8 a.m., you will find folks warming-up, completing registration, checking out food for sale and kicking off the on-site health fair. Then at 9:00 a.m., the Walk begins! Itʻs a five kilometer walk around Kapiʻolani Park and the Honolulu Zoo, starting and ending at the Bandstand.
Cost: Registration is FREE, donations are highly encouraged. Parking is suggested at Waikiki Elementary School
Here, from Hawaii Center for AIDS staff member Jason Huynh, is why we hope YOU will join the walk, or support those who are in the walk:
By Jason Huynh, Hawaii Center for AIDS
We are walking to raise awareness and support for individuals with HIV/AIDS. Since we are an HIV research unit and clinic, we interact with patients every day and are passionate in providing much needed resources, support, and hope for the future.
At the AIDS Walk, there is so much energy with cheering at every corner of the way. It truly is a celebration of all the effort we put in, whether as a patient, family member, friend, or healthcare professional. And it is humbling to see various communities all come together with a common thread.
I’m young and barely remember the heavier stigma of HIV/AIDS and sexuality; but from listening to others, I see the event as providing a safe and open space for all types of people. It surprises me how much support there is in the community and how empowered and energized people are! This definitely draws in a great group of people, and I invite everyone to make it on April 15th!
