Dr. Mukesh Kumar, of the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), has developed a guinea pig model for Zika virus infection, which may play in future research into the emerging mosquito-borne pathogen. Zika has caused great concern around the world.
Up to 80 percent of individuals infected with the Zika virus present no symptoms, yet infection has been linked to development of severe fetal abnormalities, including stillbirth and microcephaly. A critical step to understanding Zika virus pathogenesis is the development of an animal model. In this video, Dr. Mukesh Kumar, of the JABSOM Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, describes the animal model he has developed.
