The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Grants Development Office (GDO) are the “Outstanding Team of 2017,” and they were celebrated for that achievement at the Research Corporation of the University of Hawai’i (RCUH) Annual Employees of the Year luncheon today at Wai’alae Country Club.
The award is a terrific recognition for team members Megan Kira, Lori Chun, Kari Kim, Tammy Ho and Susan Ordinado. It acknowledges the top-notch professionalism and service they provide to the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa (UHM). Along with the recognition, the GDO won a $1000.00 prize to share. The team was nominated by Dr. Marla Berry, Chair of JABSOM Cell and Molecular Biology.
More about the GDO
The GDO staff are critically important to the process by which JABSOM researchers and clinicians seek and obtain the highly competitive funding grants which allow important research for our Hawai’i community. The office reviews grant proposals, collaborative agreements, and financial and personnel requirements, and assists with budget preparation, grants writing, and a host of other activities. There is more work that continues once a project is funded, while the office ensures that all requirements are met before the work supported by grants is implemented. Congratulations, Grants Development Office!

JABSOM-Okinawa Partnership Nominated
Dr. Satoru Izutsu, JABSOM Vice Dean, nominated Dr. Kaoru Ashimine, Medical Director at Chubu Hospital in Okinawa for his role in medical education and training. The University of Hawaiʻi collaboration with Okinawa Prefectural Chubu Hospital is marking its 50th anniversary this weekend with a panel discussion and reception at the UHM Korean Studies Center. UH was recruited after World War Two, at the request of the U.S. Army and State Department, to introduce a U.S. style postgraduate clinical training program to enhance the workforce of physicians in Okinawa. The program has helped train hundreds of physicians for the islands of Okinawa and neighboring archipelagos of Miyako and Yaeyama Islands. This weekend’s anniversary event, on Sunday, November 5, is free and open to the public.
Some 200 people attended the Awards Luncheon hosted by RCUH.
