Twice a year on Neighbor Islands and once a year on O’ahu, Teen Health Camps offer a daylong session designed to inspire middle and high school students to consider working in health care fields.

This year’s Hawai’i Island Teen Health Camp in Hilo took place at the UH Hilo campus on Saturday, August 29. Medical, pharmacy and nursing students from the University of Hawai’i system hosted more than 100 middle and high school students.

JABSOM medical students set up areas where the young people could find out what it’s like to make a cast for a broken bone or sew up a cut on a mannequin’s arm.

Health education is also incorporated in the Teen Health Camp day activities to encourage students to think about their own health as well as that of their family and friends.

“Overall it was an incredibly gratifying day for us medical students, and hopefully an equally fun day for the students!” said MD student Jordan Wang.

This year’s Teen Health Camp in Hilo was the biggest yet! From our MD students and staff: “a big mahalo to all of the students who were able to join us!”

Teen Health Camps are made possible by teamwork between the Hawai’i Area Health Education Center at JABSOM, the Hawai’i Careers Opportunity Program, Nā Pua Noʻeau, the Department of Education Health Pathways teachers, the UH Center for Cardiovascular Research and other volunteers from the local community.

In addition to stimulating the interest of young people in the health sciences, Teen Health Camps also help build the State’s future workforce in health care.  Young people who might not have considered health careers get an opportunity to see what the field could be like.
