Sixty-three members of the University of Hawaiʻi medical school Class of 2018 learned today where they will begin their careers as new doctors in the next phase of training which is required before they can begin practicing medicine on their own.

The process of being accepted into post-medical school Graduate Medical Education is called “Match Day.”

Our MD graduates (who receive their degrees this May), matched into 15 different medical specialties, in 13 different states, including Hawaiʻi. The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) continues to be a national leader in producing physicians who have primary contact with patients — those working the front lines of caregiving where MD shortages are most critically felt. The traditional primary care specialties include Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Pediatrics and the additional primary contact fields include Emergency Medicine and OB-GYN.

Altogether, 63% of the members of the JABSOM MD Class of 2018 are becoming primary contact doctors.

Today’s John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Match Day Ceremony kicked off at the coffee-fueled hour of six o’clock in the morning. At that same moment, the clocks in other time zones around the country read later hours, but all of America’s medical school seniors did the same thing: they gathered to experience “The Match.”

Six of our 63 medical students matching today are from Hawaiʻi Island, one is from Maui and all but a handful of the rest (we accept 10 out-of-state students per year) are Oʻahu residents.

These are the fields of medicine the 2018 JABSOM graduates will train in:
• Internal Medicine 19
• Emergency Medicine 8
• Pediatrics 7
• Family Medicine 6
• General Surgery 5
• Psychiatry 5
• Anesthesiology 4
• Orthopedic Surgery 2
• Dermatology 1
• Neurology 1
• Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation 1
• Plastic Surgery 1
• Radiology/Nuclear Medicine 1
• Radiation Oncology 1
• Urology 1

Mom, Dad and MD student are overjoyed by the Match Results.
