On Monday, October 19, JABSOM first-year students completed two intubation workshops in the Medical Education Building. Led by Dr. Takashi Matsui of Anatomy, Biochemistry & Physiology and a number of teaching assistants, the workshops were designed to show first-year students how to care for patients in emergency situations.
The workshop began with a slideshow lecture and two demonstration videos to show how to properly insert a tube into a patient’s trachea for ventilation. Afterwards, first-year students huddled into small groups and performed a hands-on simulation of the procedure using a simulated patient mannequin.
“We actually studied these cases before,” said Celina Hayashi, a first-year medical student. “So it was really helpful to reiterate some of the key concepts of those cases and really feel what it’s like to treat a patient in distress and work together with our classmates.”
Each student took turns playing ‘attending physician’ and tried to intubate their mannequin patient within a limited amount of time, so that they’d know how to quickly perform the life-saving technique during an emergency should a patient not otherwise be able to breathe.
“It was really fun,” Hayashi says. “I learned a lot and it was really valuable. Intubating the patient in 10 seconds was a huge accomplishment for myself and it felt really great!”
