University of Hawai’i medical students students Maiya Smith and Tyler Thorne joined John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) faculty surgeon Dr. Chad Cryer recently to help KITV-4 news reporter Eliza Larson explain common running injuries to viewers ahead of the December 9, 2018 Honolulu Marathon.
Larson was particularly interested in the fact that Smith is planning to run the 26.2-mile race (not the first time Smith has done a marathon) and because both Smith and Thorne were among the group of JABSOM MD students who traveled to Kona in October this year to work the first aid tent at the 30th Iron Man Championship competition.
Dr. Cryer, who works with patients at the John A. Burns School of Medicine Hyperbaric Treatment and Wound Care Center, also is a former athlete and offered the medical advice to the reporter, while the students stuck to what they witnessed in the first aid tent and, in Maiya’s case, what they know first-hand as runners themselves.
