Applications are being accepted until March 1st for the 2019 Abraham Kagan, MD Endowed Fellowship which is eligible for MD resident trainees and students pursuing an MD, MS or PhD degree at the University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa (UHM) John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), students pursuing an MPH, MS, or PhD degree in Public Health Studies at UHM, Nursing students pursuing MS, DNP, or PhD degrees at the UHM School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene.
Marion G. Kagan established this endowed fellowship in memory of her husband, cardiologist Dr. Abraham Kagan. From 1965 until his retirement in 1989, Dr. Kagan led the Honolulu Heart Program, a research project which studied thousands of men of Japanese ancestry to see how differences in lifestyle affected rates of heart disease and stroke. The study involved 8,000 men in Hawai‘i, many of whom are still being monitored today. A number of the findings in the study have been used to guide physicians in treating heart disease as well as a number of other health issues.
The purpose of this award is to provide graduate fellowships to select MD residents and students pursuing MD, MS, MPH, DNP, and PhD at UHM who have expressed an interest in working in the field of international health upon completion of their studies/training. Recipients of the Kagan Fellowship are awarded funds of up to $4,000 which may be used for costs associated with international travel related to the recipient’s studies in public health (e.g. lodging, airfare, and ground transportation) and costs associated with research, preferably with a cross-cultural population. Recipients must also have demonstrated or expressed an interest in working in the field of international health upon completion of their studies/training.
The awardee(s) will be required to sign a statement confirming that he/she will be enrolled at the University of Hawai‘i during the award period. It is also important to note that award recipients will be required to submit a written report on how the funds were used and his/her current involvement in the field of international health. The report must be submitted within one year of receiving funds.
