The JABSOM Mentoring Program (JMP) had a delicious bake sale today, offering everything from baked goods to bento boxes! JMB accepts donations and donated bake goods to help with their program.

ABOUT JMP

JMP mentors current John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) students (the JMP Planning Committee), with the goal of providing peer-to-peer support for our fellow students.

Leimomi Kanagusuku, MS-2 (second-year medical student) explains, “JMP is relatively a recent program that we have established, and it has a few aspects to it. The academic portion, has to a lot with helping MS-1’s (first year medical students). It is tailored towards helping MS-1’s, and we put up a lot of panels for them. One is the MD-5 panel, in between our first and last year, we get to do a lot of different things. This gives second-year students a chance to show what they did in the past and first-year students can decide what they want to do and what peaks their interest.”

“Another thing we do is the ‘mock anatomy and pathology exam,’ said Kanagusuku. “It’s really good because a lot of students haven’t been exposed to anatomy or pathology, it’s a good way for them to see how JABSOM will administer those exams. JMP is also involved with the MS-1 orientation and there is a lot for the MS-1’s to do and JMP wants the students to be acclimated to the program.”

Gabriel M. Lapid, MS-2 adds,  “In addition to helping our new students become acclimated to our school and environment and the rigors of education here, t he JABSOM program also provides a venue for a continuous, year-to-year, first year’s, second year’s and so forth. ”

“Events like today — we have pod advising, where students come together and discuss what our school life has been like and what we can expect. We share advice, we share frustrations and it really helps the students. We get to help each other and see each other’s insights. Aside from that, we also have service activities,  and they offer ways to bond with students from different years.  For example, today we completing our Christmas cards for the Lunalilio Home and other care homes here in Hawai’i. In our last JMP event, we took pictures and now we are going to decorate the cards. It helps us remember that there is more to health care, other than just studying medicine in the clinic. It also involves community and remembering that it is really about the care for our patients,” said Lapid.
