The John A Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) has more than 1,200 clinical faculty, physicians all over the state (many of them alumni) who help teach medical students and MD residents in our affiliated community teaching hospitals and at their private practices. Over the summer, the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health (OB-GYN) invited its clinical faculty to the University of Hawai’i’s Kaka’ako campus to say “mahalo”.
Awards and Honors
Some of the volunteer faculty were also singled out for awards, an annual tradition, with the Colin C. McCorriston Master Teacher’s Award (Society of Teaching Scholars) going to Simon Chang, MD. He received the highest evaluation scores from students.

Like Dr. Chang, the other physicians receiving awards are also past winners. Irwin Lee, MD and Russell Fujioka, MD were recipients of the Program Directorʻs Resident Teaching Award.
This year, Dr. Lee was singled out for receiving high evaluation scores from the MD Residents, while Dr. Fujioka was honored for completing and turning in the most evaluations of the MD Residents.

Also honored was Leticia Diniega, MD, for the 2014 Program Director’s Resident Teaching Award.
Each honoree received a brand-new white coat and a certificate. And all those busy volunteer faculty who were able to come were given coffee-to-go holders with logos marking 2015, the 50th anniversary of the UH medical school.
