The Fall 2017 session of the Dr. Rosita Leong Mini-Medical School at the University of Hawai’i (UH) drew another large class of interested “students”. More than 150 people attended the sessions. Among them was a young man who attended along with his grandfather. Eighteen year-old Colby Watase joined his grandfather Mark Watase for the Fall Session, which took place on five Saturday mornings from October 27 through November 4.

“They had perfect attendance and were active participants,” said Dr. Virginia Hinshaw, UH Mānoa Chancellor Emeritus and Professor, who oversees the program at the UH John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). “Having a grandfather and grandson was very special in my view. Our age range for this particular class was 18-93 – Colby was the 18 year-old,” she said.

The Dr. Rosita Leong Mini-Medical School offers Spring and Fall sessions that explore different topics about healthy aging, ranging from understanding normal changes during aging to making lifestyle and health decisions that will enable senior citizens to thrive. The information is geared to current and future seniors, but there is no age limit. Dr. Hinshaw notes that it is important to start early with healthy choices. The course will concludes with a special “graduation” ceremony to celebrate everyone’s commitment to healthy aging.
