2015 JABSOM MD Alumna earns Mayo Clinic Outstanding Research Achievement Award as an MD Resident

University of Hawaiʻi educated Dr. Isabel Hujoel is winning awards once again for her academic achievements — this time at the Mayo Clinic, where the 2015 graduate of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) is currently a Senior MD Resident in the Graduate Medical Internal Medicine Residency Training program in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Hujoel is receiving a 2018 “Outstanding Research Achievement Award” from the Mayo Clinic. Only two members of the 48 graduating Internal Medicine Residents at the Mayo Clinic are receiving the award.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Dr. Hujoel has been an exceptional researcher and leader throughout her residency. In 2016, she won a Media Outreach award for her presentation at the annual American College of Gastroenterology Meeting. Her oral presentation was titled “Real-Life Case Finding of Undiagnosed Celiac Disease: Exposing the Celiac Ugly Truth.” In 2018, she was awarded a Poster of Distinction given to the top 10% of posters at the Digestive Disease Week meeting. Her work has resulted in 11 publications, six of which are firth author. She also ahas a book chapter, five abstracts and four presentations to her credit.

“She clearly has a strong drive to create new knowledge that will further advances in medicine,” wrote the residency program leaders in a letter to JABSOM on April 13. Dr. Hujoel will begin a fellowship in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in July of 2018.

Congratulations to outstanding JABSOM Alumna Dr. Isabel Hujoel! Thanks for making JABSOM shine bright during your continued training in Minnesota.

Dr. Hujoel was supported in her educational endeavors by the Hawaiʻi Medical Association Alliance (HMAA) Endowment Award, which she received during the JABSOM MD Convocation Ceremony at the Kennedy Theatre.
