The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) and the University of Hawai‘i Cancer Center are pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Kaka‘ako Campus Compliance Week, October 19-23, 2015. This year’s theme is “Research Compliance & Cyber Security.”
The Kaka‘ako Compliance Week focuses on activities to raise awareness, educate, and help ensure compliance with research and cyber security requirements. The event coincides with National Cyber Security Awareness Month in October and Corporate Compliance and Ethics Week in November.

The weeklong event will educate employees and students on research compliance and cyber security measures that affect the Kaka‘ako campus. JABSOM and the Cancer Center protect valuable research data by providing secured wireless access throughout the campus, secure email, and training and reminders about phishing attempts. The campus also works to protect personal data and electronic devices.
The primary research focus of JABSOM and UH Cancer Center over the decades has been to improve the health of Hawai‘i’s ethnically diverse population. As leading research institutions, they are committed to assuring that their research complies with federal, state, and university requirements.
In 2015, the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa was recognized for excellence in cyber security research when it was designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Research by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.
Activities will be held on the Kaka‘ako campus from October 19 through October 23, 2015 for JABSOM and UH Cancer Center employees, students, and affiliates.
- “Cultivating a Culture of Compliance at UH” presentation by the UH Office of Research Compliance on the resources it has available to researchers. October 22, 9:30-10:30.
- “Practical IT Security” presentation by the JABSOM Office of Information Technology on how to keep data and equipment safe while thwarting cyber criminals. October 23, 11:30-12:30.
- “Waste Disposal,” “Laboratory Attire and PPE,” and “Practical IT Security” poster displays throughout the Kaka‘ako campus. Displayed October 19-23.
- “Compliance Newsletter” with informative articles on research compliance and cyber security procedures at JABSOM and UH Cancer Center. Available October 19-23.
- “Laboratory and PPE All-Stars” unannounced visits to JABSOM laboratories throughout the week to recognize personnel complying with requirements for laboratory attire and personal protective equipment. During the week of October 19-23.
- “HIPAA online training annual reminder” to all JABSOM and UH Cancer Center personnel performing human subjects research. During the week of October 19-23.
