It was Mother’s Day, as it frequently is the second Sunday in May when the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) holds a Convocation Ceremony, the day after the University of Hawaiʻi Commencement Exercises, to honor those who swear to “first, do no harm.”
The JABSOM Class of 2019 includes 73 physicians, a dozen of them from our rural neighbor island communities, and all of them proud children whose loved ones were chosen to present them a maile lei while Office of Student Affairs Director Dr. Larry Burgess (JABSOM MD 1980) read a message from the student.

Our video is meant especially for our MD students, their families and our faculty and staff, as it contains clips of each individual student’s lei presentation and read-aloud comment, and ends with highlights of the Commissioning Oaths taken by two of our MDs who will continue their training while serving in the United States armed forces.

Congratulations
The John A. Burns School of Medicine is also proud this week of our graduates in our Biomedical Sciences with concentrations in disciplines including Tropical Medicine, Cell and Molecular Biology, Epidemiology, Clinical Research, Developmental and Reproductive Biology, and in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Medical Technology. We congratulate our seven new PhDs, a new Doctor of Tropical Medicine, 19 new holders of Master’s degrees and 13 of Bachelor’s degrees awarded by JABSOM during May’s Spring Commencement Exercises.
